Get an Ultrasound Before Anything Else

A positive pregnancy test confirms only that a pregnancy hormone is present. A free ultrasound tells you what a test cannot: how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, and whether the pregnancy is developing. Those details determine what your options actually are.

  • Gestational age: The abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation only. Knowing how far along you are determines which procedures are available.
  • Location: A pregnancy that has implanted outside the uterus is called an ectopic pregnancy. This is a medical emergency that the abortion pill cannot treat.
  • Viability: Up to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. A positive test does not always mean the pregnancy is still progressing.

Cecil Pregnancy and Family Resource Center provides pregnancy testing and ultrasounds at no cost.

What to Know About Abortion Methods

There are two types of abortion. Which one applies to you depends on gestational age.

Medical abortion uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone that sustains the pregnancy. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through cramping and bleeding. Risks include incomplete abortion, infection, and heavy bleeding.

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinical setting, typically after 10 weeks. Risks include uterine perforation, cervical damage, and infection.
