You found out you’re pregnant. Now comes the part that might feel even harder: telling your parents. The fear of how they’ll react can feel paralyzing, especially when you haven’t had time to process it yourself.

Schedule a free, confidential appointment at Cecil Pregnancy and Family Resource Center in Elkton before you do anything else. You don’t have to walk into that conversation without support.

Confirm Your Pregnancy First

Before the conversation with your parents, it helps to know exactly where you stand. A home test can be wrong. Cecil Pregnancy and Family Resource Center offers free pregnancy testing. Following a positive test result, a free limited obstetric ultrasound can confirm how far along you are and whether the pregnancy is developing in the right location. Having that information in hand gives you something concrete to share.

Think About When and Where

The setting matters. Choose a time when your parents aren’t rushing out the door or distracted by something else. A quiet moment at home is usually better than a car ride or a busy evening.

You don’t need a script. Starting with something simple is enough:

  • Tell them you need to talk about something important.
  • Say you found out you’re pregnant.
  • Let them respond before you try to fill the silence.

Their first reaction may be strong. That does not mean it’s their final one. Many parents need a few days to adjust before they can show up for you the way you need them to.

Consider Your Safety

If there is a history of unsafe or threatening behavior in your home, your safety comes first. You may want to tell another trusted adult before your parents, or have someone present when you share the news. Talking in a public place or by phone is also an option.

If you’re ever concerned about your safety, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233), available 24/7.

You Do Not Have to Figure This Out Alone
