An ultrasound is important because it can confirm a viable pregnancy and indicate how far along you are by using measurements to estimate the gestational age of the fetus. At Cecil Pregnancy and Family Resource Center, we provide limited ultrasounds after we have seen proof of pregnancy or administered a pregnancy test at our center. We do not however, perform ultrasounds to determine the gender of the fetus.

In most cases, an ultrasound can determine when your due date is, if the fetus has a heartbeat, the development of the fetus, if the pregnancy is within the uterus, and if your pregnancy is developing under normal conditions.

If you are considering having an abortion, an ultrasound should be performed to determine how far along you are. This information will be necessary for you to determine the cost of an abortion, and if you qualify for an abortion pill.

What can you expect at your first appointment?

At your first appointment, if you do not have proof of pregnancy, we will provide a free pregnancy test that will be performed at our center. Depending on the date of your last known period, we will either perform an ultrasound during your appointment or schedule one for a future date. We provide one free ultrasound per pregnancy starting at 6 weeks up to 20 weeks.

We ask that you drink 24 ounces of water 30 minutes prior to your appointment to ensure that you have a full bladder. This will help our nurse manager see more clearly when she conducts the ultrasound.
