Adoption can be a beautiful journey. Placing a child in a loving family is one of the bravest decisions a woman can ever make. Adoption allows families to share their life with a child and enjoy the unique experience of parenthood, while providing a loving, stable home. Some women find the process difficult, while others find it to be very rewarding. No matter how you feel, your emotions are valid. No one has the right to tell you how you should feel during this time.

You may have heard about adoption before. There are actually three types of adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. Cecil Pregnancy and Family Resource Center is here to educate you about these options so you can move forward with confidence and clarity.

Open adoption

In an open adoption, you have contact and communication with the child and their adoptive family. Together, you can create a plan regarding how involved and present you will be in the child’s life. This is a good plan for women who would like to have greater say in the process and know the child as they grow. You have the ability to define things the way you would like them to be defined.

Semi-open adoption

With a semi-open adoption, you have contact with the child and adoptive family, but all communication is carried out via a third party, which is typically either an adoption attorney or agency. This may be the perfect choice for women who still want to have a relationship with the child, but with certain boundaries and conditions in place.

Closed adoption

With this form of adoption, all records are sealed, and you remain completely anonymous. Women who want to maintain their privacy may choose this plan. The adoptive family will not know who you are, where you work, or where you live.

am i covered financially during adoption?

It is important to note you will never be asked by an adoption agency to cover any expenses during the adoption process. In fact, you may even be able to receive adoption financial assistance in Maryland. According to state law, adoptive families are permitted to cover birth parent expenses such as her food, clothing, and shelter.
